Dobby is freed when he is given an item of clothing by his master, so the sock is hidden inside the book by Harry, who hands it to Lucius Malfoy, he in turn passes the book to Dobby, not realising the trick and releases him from his life of slavery to the Malfoy family.

After being tricked into freeing his family’s house-elf an enraged Malfoy tries to attack Harry, but clever Dobby quickly steps in, sending Lucius tumbling across the floor.
